Taly rolled onto her side and snuggled deeper into the warmth of her bed. The hard, firm warmth of her bed.

Wait.

Hard?

Firm?

Her bed wasn’t either of those things.

Opening her eyes, the low light she’d left on revealed she was snuggled against a muscular chest, a naked muscular chest. Tipping her head up, her gaze met Ranvir’s.

“You invited me to join you,” he reminded her quietly.

“I did.” Reaching up, she caressed his jaw. “Did I sleep twelve hours?”

“No. Pike and Tane only took eight and relieved us.”

“That was nice of them.” Her thumb brushed the CR branded into his flesh. “Does this hurt? Why haven’t your nanobots healed it?”

“Not anymore.” Capturing her hand, he brought it to his lips and kissed her palm. “The guards branding us let us know Shui specifically designed the ink so our nanobots couldn’t heal it.”

“Bastard.”

“He wanted us marked as fugitives for the rest of our lives.” Shui also knew it would make it easier for bounty hunters and assassins to identify cyborgs, but he wouldn’t tell Taly that.

“Well, it doesn’t. It shows you stood up against what you knew was wrong. That makes you a hero.”

“We lost,” he reminded her.

“Maybe the battle, but not the war.” Rising on an elbow, she gave him a determined look. “Now, you can fight on your terms. Not Shui’s.”

“Those of us who survived are scattered across the universe, Taly, with no way of communicating without Shui being able to trace it.”

Her mind started to race. “There has to be a way.”

“There isn’t.

Taly opened her mouth to continue to argue, then closed it. She could see the fatigue bracketing his eyes and realized this conversation could wait. Ranvir was exhausted.

“You need to sleep.”

“I need something else more.” Tilting his hips, he let her feel the rigid line of his cock.

“Damn, that’s persuasive.” She couldn’t help rubbing against him, imagining how good it would feel to have that inside her instead of one of the toys she usually used. It had been a long time since she’d been with a man. “Unfortunately, right now, you need sleep more than sex.”

Before he could argue, she laid her head on his chest, gently running a hand over it, and began to sing softly. She started with one of her favorite ballads, then moved on to another and another until she felt Ranvir’s body relax, as much as a cyborg’s body could, and he drifted off to sleep.

Rising slightly, she let her gaze travel over Ranvir, something she hadn’t had the time to do. If she had, she would have realized how long his eyelashes were. They were naturally longer than hers unless she was on stage wearing enhancers. They matched the darkness of the hair covering his head, long on the top, short on the side, although the ends were just a shade lighter. His eyebrows were dark slashes over eyes she knew were a golden brown.

His aristocratic nose and chiseled cheekbones made his lips appear softer and fuller. Taly
